First Grade Newsletter
Week of December 7th-11th
Religion: Students will continue with the unit “Waiting” and will learn about Advent.
Memory: Please see your child’s Christmas Program for dates. Please remember to leave the programs in your child’s folder. They need them for Christmas Program practices.
Reading: We will begin a new Unit 5 “What’s the Weather?” this week. We will read I Call It Sky, When a Storm Comes up, and “Listen to the Rain.” Vocabulary words used in these stories are flashes, shelter, funnel, and sprinkle. Students just need to know the meanings of these words. High frequency words used this week are two, be, green, and take. Students will be working with the long e sound spelled e, e_e, ee, and ea. We will also be learning about capitalizing names of people and the pronoun I.
Next week students will receive a “First Reader.” We will use this along with the big books. There will be more details about it in next week’s newsletter.

Special Announcements
*A paper with information about a classroom gift exchange was sent home last week. Please let me know if you did not receive one. It should have listed the child’s whose name your child drew. If you do not wish to participate, please let me know so that I can make arrangements.
*There will be no help session on Tuesday, December 8th. It will be held on Thursday, December 10th.
*There was a note at the bottom of a math homework page last week. It requested that each child bring in a few empty cans or food boxes for another lesson. They will be used to help students with counting money. Please bring in those items by Friday, December 11th. Thank you for your help.
