· Language Arts: We continue to work on the Daily Five. The students are making good progress on their “reading to self”. We added the second component of The Daily Five this past week. It is “Read to Someone”. We are working on using that component to help us become better readers. We will begin work in the basal reader, Imagine It! next week. Several decodables will be sent home. In Phonics we’ll cover spelling patterns for long A and long I. There will not be a reading story quiz this next week.
· Spelling Words: mild, care, pilot, lady, bake, time, sale, ride, able, kind
· We’ll add Challenge Words this next week. Your child needs to correctly spell eight out of the ten words on the pretest in order to work on the challenge words in addition to the regular list. Challenge words are: apron, final, quite, quiet, share
(If a challenge word is misspelled on the test their grade will not be affected. These words are for a bonus.)
· Language and Spelling tests will be 9/2/11
· Math: We will work on Topic Two: Addition Strategies. We’ll review adding 0, 1, 2 and doubles. We will add near doubles (doubles + one) and adding in any order. Don’t forget to keep working on math facts. The students are definitely showing improvement!
· Science: We’ve begun working on the first unit, The Practice of Science. There will be a quiz over the first lesson, “How Do We Use Inquiry Skills?” on Wednesday.

· We have designated collecting of school items for children of Haiti as our chapel offering for the year. More info will be forthcoming.
· School pictures will be taken on September 15.
· Grade reviews will be sent home on September 16.
· Our class will be singing at the Race for Grace on September 18th—more info as I receive it.
