Thursday: The Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Reading: We will finish our unit on homes this week. Students will be reading Finding Shelter and “Home.” Vocabulary words introduced this week are creatures, hibernating, shady, and comfort. We will be reviewing r controlled vowels this week: ar, er, ir, ur, ear, or, and ore. We will also be reviewing nouns. Nouns will be on the test. If you would like to review these at home, you can practice by giving your child sentences and having him/her circle the nouns. In first grade, we identify nouns as people, places, or things.

Wednesday: Decodable 111
Thursday: Read Finding Shelter and “Home.”
Friday: Test
Spelling: All of the words have the sound spellings ar and or.

Math: We will finish Topic 14 on Monday. There will be a test on Tuesday. We will begin Topic 20 Adding and Subtracting 10s and ones. Students will be adding tens this week.

Wednesday: Topic 20-1 and Rocket Math
Thursday: Topic 20-2 and Rocket Math
Social Studies: We will begin Unit 3 We Love Our Country. Students will be learning about American Symbols and Early American History. Students will also complete a project at home for this unit.
**Help your child select an American symbol (ex: Statue of Liberty, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, Mount Rushmore, American Flag). Your child needs to draw and color a picture of this symbol. There are pictures of many of these in the social studies book that can be copied. If they want to trace it, that is fine. Your child also needs to write three facts about the symbol. These must be in complete sentences. I will send home paper for both of these purposes. The project is due Friday, May 20th. It may be turned in any time before that.

*The last book order of the year is due Wednesday.
*The Fine Arts Fair is Thursday, May 12th. Students need to arrive in the classroom no later than 6:45. Class performances will begin at 7:00. There will be preprogram performances presented by individual students. The book fair will open at 5:30. It will be closed during the class performances.

*The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Field Trip: Thursday, May 26th.

*The end of the year is rapidly approaching! This year has really flown by. If you would like to help your child retain their skills and knowledge this summer, consider purchasing a summer workbook. There are several different types. Staples in Seymour carries a small selection. If several people would like to order books, I will order them through one of our school supply catalogs. You may be able to get a book that better fits your child’s needs that way. If you are interested in ordering one, please let me know.
