Classroom Happenings
Religion—God’s Early Family
Cain and Abel; The Tower of Babel; Noah’s Ark
*We will begin working on the books of the Bible for memory this week. We will be learning a song to help us remember them in order, and will add a few books at a time until we can say (or sing!) them all.
Math—Numeration (1-6 to 1-9)
Ordering #s; Counting money; Making change; Using an organized list for problem solving
*Students are doing a good job adjusting to our new math series and getting used to using a textbook. Our first unit test will be on Friday. We will do a practice test in class on Thursday; students will be able to bring that home to review on Thursday night.
Reading
Story: “Rugby and Rosie”
Strategies: Cross-Checking; Making and Adjusting Predictions; Cause and Effect
*Students will be learning many strategies of good readers to use during their independent reading. They have been working very hard on “Check for Understanding.” Ask them to tell you about the questions they ask after every page or section to make sure they understand what they’re reading.
Social Studies—Maps and Globes
“Me on the Map;” Continents; Oceans; Map Symbols
Language
4-square model for paragraph writing; Traits of Good Writing; Using a Rubric
*Grammar Focus: Nouns
Spelling
Focus: Words with sh, ch, th, and ng
*Students will bring home their personal list of 10 words on Monday. It will include some of these words (from Monday’s pretest) and high-frequency words they have been misspelling. The majority of the activities in their unit work will use these 10 words, but they will complete a WS or book page to practice using all the unit words.
Challenge Words:
*cheese    *sandwich    *dishwasher   *belongings
--Two of these challenge words will be randomly chosen for extra credit on Friday's test.
Homework: Word Boats, “Look-Cover-Write,” WS, Write each of your words in a sentence
*All words should be spelled correctly on spelling homework, as every time students write the word it helps reinforce the correct spelling. Encourage your child to check the spellings of words when completing the activities.

News and Notes
·   If you did not return the T-shirt slip from last week’s newsletter, please do so ASAP.
·   Thanks to those of you who donated supplies for our special writing activity. We were a little behind schedule last week, so we will be doing that this Tuesday or Wednesday.
·   Please make sure to support your child as they develop the habit of asking you to sign their binder each night. Also, remember to empty out the green “Take Home” folder every night and check the front pocket for important notices.
·   This year, our class will be supporting “Samaritan’s Feet” with our chapel offerings. This organization provides shoes to children in need around the world, along with a Bible lesson and a one-on-one discussion and prayer with a volunteer. For more information on this unique ministry, you can visit www.samaritansfeet.org.
