First Grade News
Weeks of January 3-6, 2012
Happy New Year!
Religion: Students will finish discussing the Christmas lessons.
Memory: Students will begin memorizing Luther’s Morning Prayer
Due Thursday: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger;
Due Friday: and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You.
Reading: We will continue our unit “What’s the Weather?” We will focus on long e spelled _y and _ie_ and /s/ spelled cy, as well as review the other /s/ spellings, s, ce, and ci. High frequency words this week are here, every, could, boy, some, going. Vocabulary words used in our stories this week are weather, thermometer, sleet, wind sock, ice, and fog. Students will read three stories this week: On the Same Day in March, Clouds, Rain, Snow and Ice, and A Good Day for Kites. The second and third stories are found in their First Reader. It will be sent home on Wednesday night. Please read these two stories together. The book will not be sent home any other night. It needs to be returned on Thursday. We will be using it in class. We will also be working on cause and effect.
Tuesday: Decodable 71
Wednesday: First Reader (Two Stories mentioned above)
Thursday: Decodable 72
Friday: Decodable 73 in class-sent home if needed
Spelling: Next week we will begin spelling. There will be a spelling test on Fridays. The words will be listed in the newsletter each week.
Math: We will begin Topic 8 Geometry. Students will be learning about plane shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle) and their properties (corners, sides).
Tuesday: Math Facts 55
Wednesday: 8-1 and Math Facts 56
Thursday: 8-2 and Math Facts 57
Friday: 8-3 and Math Facts 58 in class
Science: We will begin Unit 6 Engineering and Materials.

*AR Reminders
-Students need to take one AR test per week. This week we will take tests on Wednesday and Friday.
-If your child has lost his/her AR sheet, it is fine to record the book title on a regular sheet of paper. I will send a new sheet home if needed.
-We will take the STAR Reader test this week or next, as time allows. This test will determine your child’s new AR level.
