News and Notes from Grade Two
(For the Week of September 5, 2011)
Theme: Exploring Through Christ  
Bible Truths:

** Please note: The children’s Bible story book, Beginnings, will be sent home on Friday. There will be a Bible story quiz on Tuesday, September 13th. Please go through the stories with your child prior to the 13th. PLEASE SEND THE BOOK BACK ON TUESDAY.   Thank you.
                                                    
Language Arts: This week we’ll continue with the Daily Five components. The students are doing great on the “Read to Self” portion. We continue to work on the “Read to Someone” so that we can build our stamina. We will work in our basal reader, Imagine It. We’ll read the story, The Elves and the Shoemaker.   
Vocabulary Words: elves, shoemaker, flash, leather, finest
Skills: a_e, i_e,o_e, & u_e, verbs, writing complete sentences, recog nizing subjects (naming part) and predicates (telling part) of sentences
Story Quiz will be on Friday, 9/9/11.
·         Spelling Words: label, vine, bonus, wild, gate, huge, zero, make, spoke, use   
·         PLEASE REMEMBER TO KEEP ALL OF THE SPELLING ASSIGNMENTS (EVEN WORKSHEETS) IN THEIR SPELLING NOTEBOOK. ALSO, PLEASE LABEL EACH NEW WEEK WITH THE DATE. NOTEBOOKS ARE DUE ON FRIDAYS. (NOTEBOOKS MAY BE TURNED IN BEFORE FRIDAY.)   THANK YOU!
·         Please remember your child may work on Challenge Words. For your child to do this, check the number missed on the pretest. Your child needs to correctly spell eight out of the ten words on the pretest in order to work on the challenge words in addition to the regular list. Challenge words are: basic, program, usual, finest, caper
(If a challenge word is misspelled on the test, their grade will not be affected. These words are for bonus points.)
·         Language and Spelling tests will be 9/9/11.
·         Math: We will keep working on Topic Two.   We’ll work on adding more than two numbers, using strategies to add with nine and eight, and word problems.   Don’t forget to keep working on math facts. The students are definitely showing improvement!      
·         Science: Using science tools—Lesson 2 quiz on Friday. 
·         Social StudiesUnit One-Governing the People We’ll look at how a government makes laws to help people be safe and get along.  
For each unit in Social Studies we work on a project to better help us understand what is important about the unit. Your child may choose one of these options for his/her unit project. (This will be due on September 30th. )
The options are: 
·         Make a poster describing the three branches of the U.S. Government and what they do. Be ready to explain your poster.
·         Write a report about what makes one is eligible to vote in our country. Be ready to tell the class about when they will get to vote. 
·         Choose a law from a street sign you have seen. Using Activity Pattern A3 (provided by teacher), draw a picture of the law being followed. Then cut along the lines and put the pieces in an envelope. Be ready to tell about the law that is being followed in your puzzle.

·         School pictures will be taken on September 15.     
·         Grade reviews will be sent home on September 16.    
·         Our class will be singing at the Race for Grace on September 18th—more info as I receive it.
