First Grade News
Week of August 22, 2011
We had a great first week of school! Good work on learning your memory, first grade!
Religion: “The Great Flood” (Genesis 6-9)
“God’s Promise to Abram” (Genesis 12-15)
Memory: Hymn of the Month: “Be Strong and Courageous”
Due Wednesday: Be strong and courageous,
There is no need to fear;
For God is always with you,
His presence always near.
Due Friday: As you explore this vast world,
Wherever you may go,
The Lord God travels with you,
His love all you need know.
Math: We will continue reviewing numbers to 12. Students will be using dot patterns to see numbers. (example: dice, dominoes, playing cards) There will be a test Thursday.
Please make sure that you do only the side of the homework listed for that night.
Monday: Side 1-3 and 1-4
Tuesday: Side 1-5
Wednesday: Side 1-6
Thursday: Practice counting to 100. No worksheet
Reading: We will continue reviewing the alphabet. On Monday and Wednesday students will bring home a Pre-Decodable. These books contain words the students should be familiar with as well as picture clues for unfamiliar words. Students should be able to read these books on their own. Please have your child read the books two times. Please let me know if your child has difficulty reading the book. The books need to be returned the next day.
Students will also be learning how to pick “good fit books” and how to read with a partner.
Tuesday: I Have decodable
Thursday: There Is decodable
Science: We will continue learning about how scientists use their senses and tools to make observations.
Other Announcements
*A note about class shirts will be coming home this week. Please do not send any money with the form. The cost is dependent on how many people order shirts. In the years past, it has been around $7. We will be keeping the same colors we had last year and the year before. Last year the shirts ran a little small. You may wish to order up a size. Adult shirts are also available.
*We will begin Specials this week. Students need to wear or bring gym shoes on Wednesday.
*Please send a note or call the office if your child will not be going home the usual way. Many times students wait until the end of the day to give me verbal messages about their rides home. It is very difficult to verify these at 3:15.
*Also, if you have a message for me (you need a form, the website wasn’t working,etc.), please send me a written note or email. As with going home messages, students don’t always tell me right away or the message can become a little mixed up.
