First Grade News
February 22nd-26th
 
Religion: Mrs. Osterman will be teaching religion while Mrs. Klosterman is on maternity leave. They will be working on the unit “Changes.”
 
Memory: In the event of a snow day, memory will still be due.
We will be working on memorizing some of the songs for the musical.
          “Snow White”
          Monday: Once upon a time in a far-off place, lived a maiden with a very lovely face.
          Tuesday: And she sang a song from morning ‘til night, while forest creatures listened with delight.
          Wednesday: Snow White, Snow White. Let your voice fill the air.
          Thursday: Let it float everywhere. Sing your gentle song, Snow White.
 
Reading: We will continue Unit 7 I Think I Can. This week we will work on /aw/ spelled au_, aw, augh, ough, al, and all. The students will read The Little Engine That Could and “Riddles.” Vocabulary words used in our selections are dining car, fine, yards, and riddles. There will be questions about the story on the test as well as the vocabulary words.
          Monday: Decodable 92
          Tuesday: Reread The Little Engine That Could at home.
          Wednesday: Decodable 93
          Thursday: Decodable 94 and reread The Little Engine That Could.
          Friday: Test
 
Spelling: There will be a pretest on Monday and a test on Friday.
Spelling Words: draw, fault, saw, awful, lawn, auto, pause, because
Challenge Words: applaud, straw
A spelling worksheet may be sent home this week for homework.
 
Math: This week students will draw and measure line segments, count nickels and pennies, and order events by time.
          Monday: Lesson 97
          Tuesday: Lesson 98
          Wednesday: Lesson 99
          Thursday: Fact Test and Fact Homework only Lesson 100
          Friday: Written Test
 
Science: We will start an experiment to see how seeds change as they develop into plants. We will also begin Unit 5: Food Chains.
 
Social Studies: There will be a test on Unit 3 Thursday. 
          *Vocabulary words to know: hero, landmark, flag, freedom, national holiday
          *Know that settlers fought a war against England to win their freedom.
          *Know what document was written after the war wit England.
          *Know the names of the landmarks discussed in the unit.
          *Know what the holidays discussed in the unit celebrate.
          *There will also be a few questions to answer about a calendar.
 
Announcements
 
*The LCS Auction is Saturday, February 27th. Tickets are available in the office. Thank you again for the contributions to our classroom basket.
 
*Please return the forms for National Lutheran Schools Week as soon as possible. National Lutheran Schools Week is March 8th.
 
*Help session will be on Tuesday.
 
*ISTEP+ Testing will begin March 1st. First grade does not take the test.
 
*The lunch menu may need to be adjusted due to the snow days and delays. If I know the changes ahead of time, I will tell the students the day before. The alternate choice and salads should remain the same.
