First Grade News
Weeks of December 14th-18th and December 21st and 22nd
 
 
Religion: Jesus is Born! (Luke 2:1-7) and Shepherds See the Savior (Luke 2:8-20)
 
Memory: Christmas Program
 
Reading: We will continue our unit “What’s the Weather?” We will focus on long e spelled _y and _ie_ and /s/ spelled cy, as well as review the other /s/ spellings, s, ce, and ci. High frequency words this week are here, every, could, boy, some, going. Vocabulary words used in our stories this week are weather, sparkles, and thermometer. Students will read three stories this week: On the Same Day in March, Clouds, Rain, Snow and Ice, and A Good Day for Kites. The second and third stories are found in their First Reader. It will be sent home on Tuesday night. Please read these two stories together. The book will not be sent home any other night.
          We will continue to work on capitalization, focusing on days and months. We will also talk about writing the date using a comma. (Month Date, Year)
 
          Monday: Decodable 71
          Tuesday: First Reader (Two Stories mentioned above)
          Wednesday: Decodable 72
          Thursday: Decodable 73 in class, 74 sent home
          Friday: Test
          Monday (Dec. 21st): Read a book of your choice at home.
 
Math: This week we will be using the boxes and cans that have been brought in to create a grocery store. Students will practice buying objects using pennies and dimes. They will be adding two digit numbers without regrouping. We will also use rulers to draw line segments.
          Monday: Lesson 71 and Fact Homework
          Tuesday: Lesson 72 and Fact Homework
          Wednesday: Lesson 73 and Fact Homework
          Thursday: Lesson 74 and Fact Homework
          Friday: Test
          Monday (Dec. 21st): Lesson 75 and Fact Homework
 
Social Studies: There will be a test on Thursday. Below is a list of items to study. Please focus mainly on these items. Social Studies books should go home every night.
          *Vocabulary Words: resource, continent, state, country, globe
          *Know the different types of bodies water (lake, river, ocean, etc.)
          *Be able to name some of Earth’s resources.
          *Be able to name different types of recreation.
          *Tell how a town is different from a city.
          *Looking at a map of the U.S., be able to identify the borderline between the U.S. and Canada and the U.S. and Mexico.
 
Science: A vocabulary worksheet will be sent home on Friday, December 11th. Please complete and return to school. Students do not need to cut it apart at home. The worksheet will be sent back home for students to study. Please return the sheet on Monday, December 14th
There will be a science test on Friday. Please save any science sheets that are sent home to use as a study guide. 
*Vocabulary Words: flower, antennae, camouflage, root, stem, leaf
*Know how the following special parts help the animal or plant:
          A mountain goat’s fur
          A giraffe’s neck
          A hippo’s nose and ears
          A cactus’s spines
          A plant’s roots
*Know how the animals in the chapter warn other animals of danger.
*Know how the snowshoe hare’s fur keeps it safe.
         
 
Special Announcements
 
*Students are invited to bring their favorite Christmas book to share with the class this week. If they are bringing a book from home, please make sure that their name is in it. 
 
*Please remember that we will continue to go outside, weather permitting. Students need to dress appropriately. 
 
* December 21st will be a dress up day sponsored by the Student Council. Students are invited to wear a Christmas shirt.
 
* Chapel will be on Monday, December 14th and Tuesday, December 22nd.
 
* We are already starting to think about the LCS Auction in February. Our class basket theme will be “Gift Wrap.” Items or monetary donations may be brought in any time after Christmas Break.
 
* First Grade has raised $122.29 through Chapel offering for Heifer International. That’s enough to buy a pig, goat, or sheep! Keep up the great work.
 
*Thank you for sending in the boxes, containers, and cans for the math lessons.
