First Grade News
November 2nd-November 6th, 2009
Religion: Solomon (1 Kings 3:3-15) and Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20: 1-28)
Memory: Luther’s Morning Prayer (We have been saying this most mornings. The students should be familiar with it.) Just a reminder, the assignments are listed as what is assigned each night. For example, Monday’s memory is to study Monday night.
Monday: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger;
Tuesday: and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You.
Wednesday: For into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things.
Thursday: Let your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Reading: This week we will finish our unit “I Am Responsible.” Vocabulary words introduced this week are environment, industry, litter, and tumble. High frequency words reviewed this week are an, they, but, do, and she. Students will be learning about the schwa sound, similar to the short u sound. ( The schwa sound is made by the underlined vowel in the following words: mother, problem, bottom, and other. ) Other sounds that we will be working on include /ng/, /nk/, and /kw/ spelled qu. Students will be learning about interrogative sentences (question sentences). We will also be discussing how to develop ideas for writing.

Wednesday: Decodable #52 in class, #53 at home
Thursday: Decodable #55
Friday: Test Decodable #54 in class, sent home if needed
Math: This week students will be ordering containers by capacity, identifying even numbers up to 20, locating numbers on a hundreds chart, and counting dimes and pennies.

Wednesday: Lesson 51 and Fact Sheet
Thursday: Lesson 52 and Fact Sheet
Friday: Lesson 53 in class
Social Studies: Students will share their map projects this week. Great work on the projects! They will also be using a map to identify Indiana and learning about globes.
Science: We will finish our unit about animal habitats this week. We have talked about forests, oceans, wetlands, and deserts. There will be a test on Wednesday, November 11th. We will do a review packet in class. Please keep this to use as a study tool. Also, the leveled readers contain the information we have talked about in class.
