First Grade News
Weeks of January 3-7, 2010
Religion: Students will finish discussing the Christmas lessons.
Memory: Our theme this month is Joy. Our hymn of the month is “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.” Students will learn verse 1 this week.
Monday: Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love!
Tuesday: Hearts unfold like flowers before thee,
Praising Thee, their sun above
Wednesday: Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the gloom of doubt away
Thursday: Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day.
Reading: We will continue our unit “What’s the Weather?” We will focus on long e spelled _y and _ie_ and /s/ spelled cy, as well as review the other /s/ spellings, s, ce, and ci. High frequency words this week are here, every, could, boy, some, going. Vocabulary words used in our stories this week are weather, sparkles, and thermometer. Students will read three stories this week: On the Same Day in March, Clouds, Rain, Snow and Ice, and A Good Day for Kites. The second and third stories are found in their First Reader. It will be sent home on Tuesday night. Please read these two stories together. The book will not be sent home any other night.
We will continue to work on capitalization, focusing on days and months. We will also talk about writing the date using a comma. (Month Date, Year) We will also discuss plurals and adjectives.

Spelling: All words, except one, have the long e spelling _y. I have included the word could because it is a high frequency word and one that is often misspelled and misread.

Math: We will begin Topic 17 Subtraction. Students will be learning about fact families and using addition facts to help them subtract. There will be a test on Monday, January 10th.

Science: We will begin Chapter 7 Weather. The students will be using what they learn in this chapter to help them with the class science fair project.
