First Grade News
November 7th-11th
Religion: Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 17-20) and Esther (Book of Esther)
Memory: We will finish The Ten Commandments.
Due Wednesday: The Ninth Commandment You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.
Due Friday: The Tenth Commandment You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
*Beginning next week, there will be memory assignments due everyday except Monday.
Reading: This week we will finish our unit “I Am Responsible.” Students will be learning about the schwa sound, similar to the short u sound. ( The schwa sound is made by the underlined vowel in the following words: mother, problem, bottom, and other. ) Other sounds that we will be working on include /ng/, /nk/, and /kw/ spelled qu. The high frequency words on the test this week will be for, out, jump, went, will, when, girl, her, with, but, and do. Students will also be working on making inferences.
Monday: Decodables 47 and 48
Tuesday: Decodable 49
Wednesday: Decodables 50 and 51 and Reading Worksheet
Thursday: Decodables 52 and 53
Friday: Test Decodables 54 and 55 in class, sent home if needed
Math: There will be a test over Topic 6 on Monday. We will begin Topic 7 on subtraction facts to 12. On Monday and Tuesday, a “Wrap-Up” will be sent home. The students will be taught in class how to use it. They should practice it at home both nights.
Beginning on Wednesday, a math fact practice sheet will be sent home. One side we will complete in class. The side that says “Homework” should be completed at home and returned. In class, students will be timed for one minute. They will write their answers in pencil. After a minute, they will complete the sheet in crayon. At home, students should just complete the sheet. They do not need to be timed. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Friday: Lesson 7-3 in class
Social Studies: We will finish Unit 1. There will be a test on Friday. Social Studies books will be sent home on Tuesday. Students will be tested over the following vocabulary words: rules, laws, community, citizen, vote. You may want to go over the lessons with your child. Please do not focus on the skill sections outside of the lessons.
