First Grade News
Week of September 19th, 2011
Religion: Crossing the Red Sea (Exodus 14:5-15:21)
Manna in the Wilderness (Exodus 16)
Memory: The Lord’s Prayer
Due Wednesday: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
Due Friday: give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
Math: We will begin Topic 4 Understanding Subtraction. Students will work on finding the missing parts of the whole. Example: 4 + ___ = 8 Four is one part. Eight is the whole. The missing part is 4. The terms used can sometimes be a little confusing on the homework. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. The math sheet we do in class does have an example box at the top that walks the students through the process.
Tuesday: Lesson 4-1
Wednesday: Lesson 4-2
Thursday: Lesson 4-3
Reading: We will wrap up our unit about schools this week. There will be a test on Tuesday. This test will include vocabulary words that we have discussed in class. Students will circle the picture of the word. The vocabulary words are uniform, graceful, invented, college, supplies.
We will also begin Unit 2 Where Animals Live. The sounds we will be working on are hard c spelled c, ck, and k (kick, camera) and r. This week some of the reading lessons have two decodablesStudents will also be learning about adjectives.
Monday: Decodable #17
Tuesday: Decodable #18
Wednesday: Decodables #19 and #20
Thursday: Decodable #21
Friday: Decodable #22 may be sent home if needed.
Social Studies: We will finish Unit 4 about Our Changing World. We will take a test as a class on Friday. Students will answer the questions aloud and the class will fill in the correct answers. A project sheet with directions will be sent home Monday.
Special Announcements
* A big thanks to all who helped make the Race to Remember Grace a success.
* As a celebration for making our goal to read 20 minutes independently, we will read outside on Tuesday. Students may bring a blanket or towel to lay on.
