November 2007

Greetings from Lutheran Central!   November is here along with the falling leaves, cooler weather, Thanksgiving, the end of the church year and the beginning of the new church year. We have extra opportunities to focus on the blessings that God has given to us and to offer Him our special thanks and praise as He continues to richly bless each of us.

November’s changes bring changes in sports seasons at Lutheran Central as well.  The girls’ volleyball teams have, after very fine seasons, finished their play and the boys football players have finished their season at the Middle School, as well.  Basketball practices have begun for both girls and boys and the season opening tournaments for the older boys and girls are the first two weekends in November at Trinity Lutheran High School in Indianapolis.  Our boys finished in second place and the girls are waiting their turn November 9-11.

Grandparents’ Day was held on November 9. The students enjoy sharing their school with their grandparents and there is much excitement throughout the school when they are here.  Grandparents have such an important role in the lives of these young people and we feel truly blessed to have them be part of our school.

Our Washington D.C. trip went well and was a great experience for the eighth graders.   The students experienced the history of our country in a truly unique way and have grown in their understanding and appreciation because of it.   Thank you for supporting the students with their fund raising efforts and for including us in your prayers while we were gone.

Speaking of Washington D.C.!  Our poinsettia sale is underway.  Our fifth through seventh graders are selling poinsettias for their trip to D.C. in the coming years. We hope that you will purchase your poinsettias for use at home and at church through the students from LC. The students must turn their order form in at school by November 16 with a delivery date of November 28.  I realize that there is not much time to sell and that there is only one Sunday, but because there is no school during the week of Thanksgiving, we had to make the cut-off date earlier! If no one asks you to buy poinsettias, do not hesitate to call the school and we will have someone call on you.  Thank you for supporting our students!

Adrienne Thompson, one of our middle school teachers, has just returned from the Indiana District Office from two days of English curriculum writing.  The Indiana District brings interested teachers from around the state in each year to write curriculum under the guidance of the District office.  The group takes the newest Indiana State standards, inserts our LC-MS standards from Integrating the Faith and adds a philosophy statement based on our Lutheran perspective.  Lutheran Schools from around the state, including LCS, can then adopt this curriculum as their own.   This process is followed each year on a rotating basis for all curricular areas and the rotation follows the state’s text book adoption cycle. Ms. Thompson will be attending a couple more meetings before the English curriculum is finalized early in 2008. We thank her for her willingness to assist at the District level

I would like to extend a personal ‘thank you’ to so many of you for the time you give to make LCS a better place.  We have had work nights, a chili supper, Washington D.C. fund raisers, a Grandparents’ Day, volleyball and now basketball season and we have library and work room volunteers.  So many of you volunteer your time and are involved in your child’s education and that is a real benefit to your child and to us.  Without your help, we could not do what we do -- you are appreciated by the staff at LCS!

God’s blessings to you and your family!

In His Service,

Kim Overgaard
