First Grade News
March 1-5
Religion: Zebedee’s Sons and Jesus (Mark 10:35-45) and The Widow’s Offering (Mark 12:41-44)
Memory: We will be working on another song for the musical. Musical practice starts this week!
“Big Bad Wolf”
Monday: You’re a great bad wolf and that’s a fact. But we understand now, it’s just an act.
Tuesday: For underneath that coat of fur, Is a real nice wolf, now that’s for sure!
Wednesday: Not a big bad wolf. Not a big bad wolf. No, you’re not!
Thursday: “Finale” song: G-R-A-N-N-Y, Granny, Granny, Granny! Time to go. Hope you enjoyed the show! The annual Granny Awards!
Reading: This week students will read The Itsy Bitsy Spider and The Hare and the Tortoise. Vocabulary words used in these stories are dew, silly, and pace. Students will be working on /oi/ spelled oi and oy, /r/ spelled wr, and /f/ spelled ph. The language arts focus this week is on possessive nouns. (Jim’s pencil-his pencil)
Monday: Decodable 95
Tuesday: Read The Itsy Bitsy Spider in reading book.
Wednesday: Decodable 96
Thursday: Decodable 97 and read The Hare and the Tortoise in reading book.
Friday: Decodable 98 sent home if needed
Spelling: There will be a pretest on Monday and a test on Friday
Spelling Words: boy, join, enjoy, loyal, spoil, voice, annoy, point, voyage, appoint
Math: Students will be working on subtracting a number from ten facts, adding nine facts, identifying a dozen and a half dozen, and measuring objects using feet.
*Our lesson on a dozen uses eggs as an example. Do you have egg cartons at home? Please send them in by Wednesday. Thank you!

Science: We will begin Chapter 5 about food chains. We will talk about a rain forest food chain.
Social Studies: We will begin Unit 4: Our Changing World. A paper with information about a project will be sent home this week.

*More information regarding the Usborne Stars Reading Program will be sent home on Monday.
*This week is Read Across America Week. On Friday, we will gather in the gym for a “Read In.” Students may bring one item to make reading more comfortable. (ex: a pillow or a blanket)
*Help Session will be on Thursday this week.
*Reports cards will be sent home Friday.
*Save your first grade purple t-shirt for National Lutheran Schools Week. All of the grades will wear them one day that week. The day is yet to be determined.
