Create Your Own Museum

You have had a chance now to explore many of the exhibits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and you have seen the variety of items on display. If you could start a museum of your own, what type would it be?
First, you need to determine your theme. Will you have an art museum, like the Metropolitan? What kind of art would you focus on? Sometimes museums are created to memorialize a certain person, like a President or a movie star. You could concentrate on a certain area of history, such as the Civil War, or something from science like plants or butterflies. Any topic you are interested in that you think will also interest others could work.

Once you have decided the theme for your museum, you need to think about what kinds of artifacts you would include. Also, how would you set up your museum? How would you display objects? Would there be interactive exhibits for visitors to try out?
Write a short essay (about one page) in which you describe the museum you would create. Explain the name of the museum, its theme, and what visitors would be able to see and do there. Be creative and detailed! Check your final copy over for spelling and grammar, and make sure to write in your best cursive.

For extra credit, you can make a model of your museum. Use a shoebox to create a diorama with miniature versions of some of your artifacts, or draw and color a detailed floor plan that shows what would be displayed where.

*Museum plan essays are due on Monday, February 16th. Extra-credit models are due Friday, February 20th.
